Every
person living will have preferences. All that a person comes in contact with
might not be preferred equally. The reason for variation is known at times and at
times not known. Only saints/aghoras have equal preference to everything. But being ordinary human beings with little
control over the mind, we have varied preferences.
Humans
being social animals are living in societies. A human society is a group of
people related to each other through persistent relations, or a large social
grouping sharing the same geographical or virtual territory, subject to the
same political authority and dominant cultural expectations. The society is
built on certain principles/traditions that are to be adhered to.
Individuals
being brought up in society will follow the basic guide lines of the society
that they are part of. In general all societies have a principle of non-nudity.
Those who differ with this principle have formed a separate society and made of
places or beaches where nudity is permitted. Thus for any society principles
are the key.
A free
society is one where the all the choices are not imposed on the individuals, it
that were the case, then a jail would be a better place to live. Broadly for
many societies of humans, holy scriptures have gives the guidelines from the
lifestyle, food, business, warfare, etc. People keep challenging the rules but
as long as the society accepts there is no problem. But when it reaches beyond
a limit the persons are punished. The limit depends from society to society.
The limit
of tolerance cannot be universal, and the religions which propagate this
universal uniformity of religion will never achieve anything except
destruction. The growth of the society happens only when people challenge the
existing principles and thrive to improve the lives. The improvement can again
be subjective to the individuals of the society.
The choice
made and the reasons for it are highly spurious. People tend to think the
choices made by them are correct, based on the societal values at the
time. The choices are only correct as
long as the people feel that way, and for others the same choice would not be
ok. This is the real beauty of the human
life, diversity.
The
reasons for the choices made are limited by the knowledge of the person, societal
norms. The judgment of the past choices repentance when we have failed, and feel
happy when met with success. The society never lets go of the success or
failures easily, and the mean is what many follow. Very few societies achieve
excellence due to this tendency of being at the mean, which promotes a general
mediocrity.
In the
end, if I cannot say why I donot eat brinjal or some other vegetable it’s a choice
different from the mean? Some call it
foolishness, while I say it’s an unusual choice. When the societal knowledge
improves to the extent to understand, may be then can I understand the reason
behind it. When Galileo first told, that earth moves around the sun, he was
punished. Since such barbarism doesn’t exists today, everyone cay dare to
follow the path of his choice. When the society matures enough everyone
understands the meaning of our choice and so do we.
The reason
for a particular choice may be the fear of the unknown, past experiences,
knowledge acquired and in some cases it’s just a gut feeling. The important
thing is not what choice we make, but to live with the choice we make and be at
peace with ourselves, others and the entire planet.
