Rape-SexIndustry-Media

Sexual assault has nothing to do with passion, it uses power and control to dominate and humiliate victims. Rape is a type of sexual assault usually involving sexual intercourse, which is initiated by one or more persons against another person ‘s consent. The act may be carried out by physical force, coercion, abuse of authority or with a person who is incapable of valid consent, such as one who is unconscious, incapitated or below the legal age of consent. Victims of rape are severely traumatized and also end up with physical injury,  STDs, pregnancy, etc which are wounds which are very difficult to heal and may take even a life time.

The sex industry consists of business which either directly or indirectly provides sex-related products and services or adult entertainment. The sex industry provides services such as prostitution, call girls, adult movie theaters, pornography, sex shops, sex oriented men’s magazines, sex movies, sex channels, etc. In India many of these businesses are flourishing even though they are illegal. When there is a demand the sources awaken to supply the need at any cost legally or illegally.

Pornography is the explicit portrayal of sexual subject matter for the purpose of sexual gratification. The term applies to the depiction to the act rather than the act itself and so does not include live exhibitions like sex shows and striptease. Pornography is often distinguished from erotica, which consists of portrayal of sexuality with high-art aspirations, focusing on feelings and emotions, while pornography involves the depiction of acts in a sensational manner, with the entire focus on the physical act, so as to arouse quick and intense reactions.

With the emergence of social attitudes more tolerant of sexuality and more specific legal definitions of obscenity, an industry for the production and consumption of pornography arose in the latter half of the 20th century. The introduction of home video and internet saw a boom in porn industry that generates billions of dollars annually. Worldwide sex industry sales for 2006 are reported to be $96billion, to put this in perspective, Microsoft who sells operating system used on most of the computers in the world reported sales of $44.8 in 2006. Sales of Walmart in fiscal year 2013 are $466billions. Global annual revenue of strip clubs in $75billions. Size of worldwide pornography industry is $57billions.

1 out of 3 visitors to adult websites are women and 9.4million women access adult websites each month. 25% of total search engine requests are related to pornography. There are 10million children in the sex industry and every minute 2children are forced into sex industry. Sex with children the first choice, hottest form of sex in the world while it may cost $30k to de-virginize 8&9 year boy or girl. Children’s characters like Pokémon, action man etc are linked to porn sites to give a first glimpse of the hidden world to the inexperienced.

Alcohol consumption is known to have effects on sexual behavior and aggression. 74% of the perpetrators and 55% of victims of rape of a nationally representative sample of college students had been drinking alcohol. 58% of men arrested for rape in India in 2010 were aged 18-30. Teens with drug/alcohol problems are 18-21times more likely to sexually abused. The effect of alcohol at point of forced sex is likely to impair ability to rectify misperceptions, diminish ability to resist advancements and justifies aggressive behavior. Indian drug enforcement agencies are finding huge exports of ketamine hydrochloride, better known as date-rape drug.  This drug is not under ban in India unlike in other foreign countries.

If going by the  data from the above table, India should be proud of its conduct, while the media bashes the society for the ills. Some people in power have even blamed the women for the rapes, the dressing of women, modernity, life style changes, public behavior, etc. All these may be a cause, but so far there is no comprehensive study of the root cause of the social ill called RAPE. Many social scientists have been beating around the bush because they cannot take the fight to the doors of the powerful lobbies that even control the underworld.

The biggest victims of rape are women and children. The sex industry, drugs are too big business to be confronted directly by the government and even the activists. Even though these are two main causes for more of the rise in crimes another giant is hiding behind its social acceptability. The alcohol consumption is another reason for the rape. To point against these holy three evils of the society, it means a loss of funding to the activists and even the governments. In India it is a well known fact that many governments are at the mercy of the alcohol mafia, and the revenue generated by the alcohol business is too much and they cannot risk the revenue opportunities.  In the name of modernization more and younger people below the permissible age limits are taking to alcohol and the suppliers’ donot want to stop for want of more business.

As if the unholy triplets are not sufficient, the media is highly being sexed up. On an average 7/10ads show that after using a particular product, you get the women. This repeated projection will have effect about the women in the minds of a average person, that women are just there to be possessed and they get attracted. This objectification of women is another reason. The Women in the name of modernization are dancing to any tune that may even degrade the whole gender, but money matters. After obtaining name and fame for the songs like munni, shiela ki jawani, these super stars begin to lecture society about restraint, etc. The liberal, intellectual and modern people of the society who cannot take on the evils talk about Kajuraho Temple are pornography, while it is an art and to be seen as erotica. The lines between the two have blurred, and the people today cannot distinguish between the two.

The irony of the secular, liberal intellectuals who call the nude art work of MF Hussian expressions even though it hurt the Hindu sentiments, the same people tell that the sculptures at the Kajuraho temple are license to promote the objectification of women in ancient Hindu culture and demonize the religion. No progressive culture, religion directly or indirectly promotes violence on women, children and if it does it is the culture of barbarians and not normal human beings.

The burden to stop the rapes is not only on men, it is as much the burden on women. The people who want to bring tough laws to stop the rapes are only fooling the people. The per capita rapes are high in developed nations and low in country like India, may be justified by saying that rapes are not reported. This is again a myth, since the mentality of people against any crime will be same though out the world, whether it is India, USA or Saudi Arabia. The young have to be continuously taught the morals, civic senses, and the biggest teacher internet cannot be stopped.

In this scenario, no amount of punishments can reduce the number of rapes being committed. The only way is to impart the morals, ethics, good sense, mutual repect in the minds of each and every person. The young should unlearn many things about women and move ahead, since those below 30years constitute 60% of today’s population. The big question is how to make the change happen? It is best left to individuals, as how each one can contribute to reduce this inhumane crime.
